Think I can get a hold of some old cedar decking and railing. It has had stain and paint over its years. Thinking of making some stake buckets but want to know if the paint/stain could keep fish from using it??

Paint can be power sprayed off, but stain is different since it actually PENETRATES the wood and some stains are HIGHLY TOXIC. the trouble is that eventually micro organisms WILL consume the wood, but also the stain residue which is then passed up the food chain to anyone eating the fish caught off of them...will not personally use painted or stained wood, sir.
My first thought was bad idea but I thought I would ask. Going to plan B, thanks guys.
btw AVOID using pressure treated wood also, and walnut wood...
Yep, most stains, preservatives, or pressure treating, contain arsenic or other toxic chemicals to stop bugs, rot, etc...all that junk will leach out in water.

I'm with the rest , try to avoid treated or painted wood. I like to use pallets but get alot of my wood from local hardwood or cedar saw mills .
