Use a coke bottle.
I was putting out brushpiles. When making two loads to a spot , we place a bouy marker. This is to assure they are together and not have to locate. I placed one and a bouy on the channel drop. Before I could get back with the second load a boat stops and gets my bouy ! Well I see them and run the boat down. The young men looked like they knew why before I said anything. I told them we don't like thieves . Some locals would shoot and ask questions later. They said they were sorry and returned the marker bouy. How can you prevent someone taking the marker bouy between loads ?

Hey Nimrod, I have forgotten my bouys a few times and maybe thats what people think. I did find one one time but the owner had written on it with a majic marker " Don't Remove! Will Return". So I left it there and went about my business. Been thinking about doing it myself or/and putting my name on them.
Did you get your brush out alright? My buddy Jim said that you didn't stay out very long. I figured that was what you might be doing.
Debra and I are going out later this evening and scouting for a few good brushpile spots. Probably fish a little too.
CATCH A BIG-UN
You can't unless someone stays there. If I seen a marker buoy in the water and not a soul around, I would assume someone forgot it. While fishing a lake once my son spotted a very small dark colored bobber in the middle of the lake. I never did see it until we were right on top of it and all it had was a piece of line and a sinker on it. It was marking a brush pile I already knew about. So maybe thats the solution, use something hard to see but you know the general area its at. BTW, we left it there.Originally Posted by NIMROD

When leaving and planning to return, I take a 20 ounce coke bottle, and tie a string to it, then tie the other end to an old wrench or something flat, then wrap the string around the wrench, not the bottle, and when it hits the bottom, it will stop letting line out, and works just like a marker.....except no one wants a coke bottle.
I have hauled about 100 pounds of jugs, bottles and trash out of the lake over the last 2 weekends. But the stuff I picked up had sinkers and hooks attached and had been there at least 3 days.
If it's a marker, write marker on the bottle so a conservation minded litter picker upper won't haul it to the dumpster.
Yeah............ one man's marker is another man's trash! :D
Funny but I always seem to bring back more stuff to the boat landing than what I started with.

Chuck the aggrivating stuff.......... Just go Fishing!
Look for humps or shallow water next to channels. I got mine out and will build some more.:DOriginally Posted by slabbandit

Yea, a small bottle never draws attention...While I do pick up trash that floats anywhere near me when the boat is stopped, I hardly ever go out of the way to chash down a 20 oz coke bottle...
