Like wire to hold the blocks on the trees to sink them?? Concrete is a pollution..
Look up how many bad chemicals are in it. It will eat your skin up. Never have had PVC do that yet..

    Have a great day.

    (601) 432-2400.

I have not heard of any changes but if you'll call that number and ask for Fisheries or Enforcement, I'm sure you'll get an answer.

Default This Post From www.mdwfp.com on 5/24/06

I pulled the following post dated 5/24/06 from mdwfp forum under "Sticky: Handgrabbling Regulations" topic. It sounds like Mr. Riecke is saying that pvc condos are okay as long as they are placed in appropriate location. Am I misunderstanding this?

    "Willisjwillis,

Our staff have discussed the intent of the prohibition on adding certain structures for handgrabbling and how they impact fish attractor-type structures. We will be writing language that allows placement of certain types of materials for fish attractors that are not allowed for handgrabbling. They distinction is that handgrabbling structures all must have a cavity to be effective and fish attractor structures bascially provide cover and attachment sites for insects. As long as there are no environmental dangers or human safety and navigation dangers associated with the placement of fish attractors, we will allow their placement in the future.

i hope you're right, but what makes me wonder is his last sentence "we will allow their placement in the future". this leads me to believe that we will have to wait until the mdwfp decides what will be allowed and when. we've been trying to find out what is happening on this matter, but to no avail. i intend to call j'son friday and see if i can find out anything. will let ya'll know. john

To me I believe that condos are an effective way to use up old scrap pvc pipe. Better in the lake providing cover for fish than taking up space in a land fill. Heck after the hurricanes and tornados you guys have had there should be plenty of material laying around.

Another advantage to the PVC condos is sinse they are made of plastic and are MUCH less SNAGGY, you are less likely to hang and break off fishing tackle. Jigheads and weights are mostly made of LEAD (a toxic metal). Less broke off jigs & weights less lead in the public waters!

Stay after those polititions! If you sit on your hands, you'll have to settle for what you've got!

Here's an idea for yall to push for if the state don't allow certain structures; but there would have to be state/federal funds available to help. You'll see why.

I used to help place structure in a COE lake in MO. They would go around and cut trees (not off the shoreline, but farther in the woods) and haul them to certain boat ramps for placement. These trees would range from 6-12 dbh (and some even larger!). Then the cool part was the "habitat barge" they used to haul a brushpile of 3-4 trees at a time. Once they were happy with the spot, the hydraulic dump bed lifted and the whole pile slid into the water.

The only non-natural items placed in the water was the concrete blocks and rope used to hold'em down. The draw back is the cost of such an operation. The barge weighed in at about $50,000 and the man-hours and equipment it took to gather all the trees to the right spots is exhausting! Rope is fairly cheap and the blocks were donated from a local manufacturer because they failed inspection. I forgot to mention that BPS had some sort of cost-share on the boat to help with the expenses.

The operation was a joint effort between the state and the COE for improvement of the fishery. The state owned the barge and the COE offered the equipment and men to do the job. The only thing I can say is to voice your opinion and maybe some of them higher-ups will get the hint. Its all about votes in the end.

Like I said it takes a lot of effort for something like this to go down, but in the long run it is well worth it. If you know anybody in the right places you might try mentioning this to them and see what happens.
