Default Bamboo brush pile on Sam Rayburn

I have been baiting crappie holes on Sam Rayburn for the last twenty years with willow trees. After tuning in to Crappie.com I tried some bamboo. I made four boo piles for starters to see how they compare to willow trees. The jury is still out but from what I have been reading I am looking forward to snatching crappie off the bamboo.

Danny, that's a good looking condo. When the crappie are holding on structure, the boo really does work well. Haven't tried anything else myself though.

Those are some really tall condos both of you have made! Danny & CrappieTexan, how tall are those condos? 20ft?

Mine are 15 ft tall.... I put em in 35 - 40 ft of water under bridges between the columns.....
Late summer & early fall the crappie hold in about 21 - 25 ft of water at Richland Chambers Lake....
Lots of shad under the bridge at that time of the year....

I build mine 12-15 ft tall and put them in 20-30 ft of water. They just looked a lot taller in your pictures I guess.

My condos are about 15-17 ft. tall and and I dropped them in 20 ft of water. Sam Rayburn is five ft low so the tops will be 8-10 ft below the surface next spring.

Hey Crappie Texan...Do you have to take a number before it is your turn to fish them under the bridge? I never have put any under the 147 bridge at Rayburn because so many people fish there. The shade would really be a + for me and the crappie in hot weather. I just might try it.

Danny the best thing about RC is there is very few that fish the 2859 & 287 bridge.... I fish them on week days so there is very little traffic. The 287 bridge is the best in the fall pattern... that is when we catch our good-uns.
This dont sound very nice but there is lots of folks that dont know how to fish the bridge.... they just tie up somewhere, hook some minnos on, hit the cooler and sit there for hours.... we fish around em and get our limit and they are tickled to death to catch 6 - 8 crappie. To each their own!

    Default bamboo Sam Rayburn

I have never fished Sam Rayburn(SR) for crappie but am interested in giving it a try. Have family in Beaumont and will be coming up about 5-8 x/yr. I am a total newby at fishing for crappie and have read a lot though. I read about bamboo for crappie and plan to make some. I came up with an easier idea I think? You just take the bamboo and push it through a red brick(the kind with holes already in it, duh) three bamboos to a brick, one to each hole. if you just cut the bottom 2 branches down to about 10" they go right through and spring back like a spear gun tip. Then you just drop em over the side. This is good for shorter ones. For the longer ones just use old cinder blocks or use new ones. By the time you buy concrete and buckets the cinders are same price. Yes you can find buckets and rocks but cinders work quick and are not that expensive. A plus is that yoiu can take 20 pieces bamboo out on the lake laying down in your boat. pick up three, stuff through brick, and drop over. They go down standing up and stay standing unless in heavy current.
I have done this in multiple places in choke canyon and I still am not catching crappie. I just am not fishing right or am dropping in wrong place. But I was pleasantly surprised with my brick idea. the 5-7 ft ones just sink right down. I can put 20 bamboos' on my boat and 7 bricks and takes me about 20 minutes to deploy them. Some guy told me about bamboo in buckets, and then I came up with the idea of bricks. Give er a try. Some day I am going to come up to SR and take a guide. Have him show me how to catch CRAPPIE.-----redfish1

Those things don't work. The fish can always smell a plastic bucket. Then they know it's a trap, and avoid it.

    Just kidding. Good looking structure.
