    oh, lol ok, well I scale them before grinding them up. To me the scales hold the slimy fishy taste and removing them makes it so much better.
    Last week I took some small bream ground them up and mixed in crab meat, green onions, small bits of celery, spices etc. Then we rolled it into balls and deep fried them. Man they were good!!

    If I ate a gar, it would mean that I wasn't able to catch a Crappie, Catfish, Bluegill, Striper, or Bass... in that order!.. but I can always catch at least one of the above mentioned species, so I see no need in eating a prehistoric fish!

    I think "Gar Eater" is just a synonym for Bad fisherman!:rolleyes:

    I would probably eat a Gar before I would eat a Carp though.

    To each his own but you don't know what your missing!! It's kind of like my wife won't eat Calamari when we go out to Olive Garden and she swore she'd never eat a nasty crawfish either until she moved to Louisiana and I got her to try one. Now she begs me to take her to eat crawfish every season, lol.

    carp is the #1 sought after fish/gamefish in the world...They eat them all over the world. We don't eat them because they are ugly. A few more years we will all be eating asian carp and think we're getting catfish.

    Seriously, I would try Gar if someone else cleaned and cooked it, I'll try anything once... twice if I like it!

    I love the raw oysters on the half shell... but it looks like it's going to be quite a while before I'll be able to find any of those around here.

    Yeah, in Russia they eat Carp and potato salad for Christmas dinner, and purge the Carp for a week in their bathtub before eating it!

    The people that order fish in restaurants never know what they're actually getting. Why would a fisherman order fish in a restaurant... because to lazy to clean and cook it himself?

    I'm pretty picky about the fish I eat and the way they're cleaned and handled before cooking, so I only eat the fish I catch unless I'm a dinner guest at someone elses house.

    Which species of gar do you eat? Is there a difference? Up here in Kansas
    I think we have long-nose which when returned to the water become the
    short-nosed variety if you know what I mean. I've heard alot them being good
    to eat but my ego hasn't allowed me to be seen with one yet.

    IMHO I think people eat certain species of fish because they are Glory Fried by anglers on TV as Choice Tablefare . These anglers impress upon the TV viewers what they think is good because of what they like to catch. TV viewers are like sheep. Half of the anglers on TV have never even caught or eaten a Gar and are afraid to deal with them.They just consider them ugly . Well to that I just say "to each his own" beauty is in the Eye of the beholder . What so pretty about a Flat head Catfish? nothing but people eat him. So to all of you that are afraid Don`t eat the Gar. Thats just more left for me. The same for the Drum or Gasper Goo

    Some clarification (1 I'm willing to try them (2 I'm curious as to species
    (3 My PAST history is just that (4 Thanks for the recipe (5 Drum, sheephead,
    gasper goo, freshwater redfish whatever you call'm are excellent tablefare
    and every angler we've fed them to thought they were walleye or another
    species, never believing they were drum, even refusing to believe.
    It just goes to show that one mans trash is another mans treasure, (even
    when it comes to wives). I've always been open minded, esp. when it comes
    to food. Some of the Viet-Laos is the most horrid smelling, looking stuff I've
    come across, however once I tried it, it was good. However, I'm never going
    to eat freshwater shad. EVER!!

    crappiedoc I had some hickory shad ground up with potatoes and green onion and seasoned with salt pepper and garlic and then made into patties and cooked by an indian woman "dot not feather" and it was so good. I make sure to take care of her during deer season as well she can make some serious venison vindaloo but dont knock it till you try it. Ive been feeding long nose gar to my inlaws for years and they still think its lobster. Its all about trying new things and having an open mind. P.S. Ill never tell them its gar ever ever ever.

    I,ve had gar backstrap cut into chunks and deep fried it was really yummy.
