One Christmas I decided I was old enough to wrap presents myself. I wasn’t very good with using Scotch tape yet so I decided if I used contact paper I wouldn’t need tape. So I carefully cut out the size of contact paper I needed and laid it on the counter sticky side up, while went to get the present to wrap. Wouldn’t you know by the time I got back our darn cat had got up there and wrapped himself for Christmas. So I placed a red bow him and set him under the tree. Every few minutes he would kick up quite a ruckus under there, I guess he was still trying to get himself wrapped just right

We have a tradition around Christmas time; kids do elf on a shelf and move the elf around different places around the house. We have a fish barometer we move each early morning or during the night when others are asleep. We have put the fish barometer on book shelves, fireplace mantle, (where I found it this morning) kitchen, bathroom, inside cabinets ...... I have got up during the night to move it to find my wife has already moved it somewhere.
it’s a goofy tradition but it’s fun for the Choate family!

One I learned the hard way. If you are going to wrap smoked mullet to give someone as a Christmas gift, make sure they don’t have a cat. Of course giving a cat owners tree a covert dusting of catnip can produce a memorable Christmas time memory.

I picked up dozen really nice fishing lures, one Christmas, for my father. I didn’t want to be to guess what it was so I took all of them out of their packaging and placed them in a knitted stocking cap. I heard a whole new vocabulary while he was pulling the hooks out of his hand and that cap. The next year he was extremely careful when opening the gift from me.

Dad was always picking up his Christmas gifts and giving them a shake, trying to guess what the item was. One Christmas I was so focused on placing 3 plastic jars, one with broken glass, (one with a few rocks and one with screws, nuts,& washers), inside his gifts box that I actually forgot to put the gift in the box. He never was able to correctly guess what was in it. But when he opened it we both got a big surprise, him for what was in it, me for what was not.

A few days before Christmas, one year, I took a small box and wrapped it like a Christmas gift. I labeled it to me from one of my friends at school. Inside the box I had taped one of my walk-in-talkies to the bottom. The hardest thing to do over the next few days was to not let them hear me snickering when I was making some well timed noises and comments. Boy, did they ever do a fantastic job cleaning that room trying to find what was causing such sounds.

One Christmas Eve grandpa and grandma decided to surprise us with a visit. Mom and dad convinced them to stay the night and be here when we opened presents the next morn. I didn’t have any gifts for them. I tried and tried, but I couldn’t go to sleep that night. I thought and thought, trying come up with a last minute gift they would really appreciate. So after everyone was asleep I quietly crept into grandpa and grandma’s bedroom and took their false teeth from beside the bed, wrapped them and placed them under tree. It was so funny listening to them talking without their teeth, I ask them to open my gifts last. Boy were they excited when they opened the gifts, but for some reason I don’t remember them spending another Christmas Eve with us.
