As far as a good deed I don't get a chance to help folks on the water because most times I'm the only one there. The lakes are trophy Bass and Bream lakes and the owner hates that the crappie are in there and loves for me to catch them. Last year I caught just over 2200 and this year so far I'm at 820. It's just my wife and I we don't eat any of the fish that I catch, we give some to friends but I filet most of them and give them to some elderly people on a fixed income or shut ins that can't get out and fish. I got the list of people from the Red Cross and I know how many filets they need for a couple of meals. I have a list and as I catch fish I clean and bag them, put them in my freezer and deliver them in the next few days. They sure do like to see me coming!
The reason I like Crappie.com is the friends I've made and you can tell and read fishing stories besides all the tips everyone share.
Here's a story I hope you enjoy.
"As ya'll know I have some beautiful private lakes to fish and 99.9% of the time I'm the only one
out there. I decided to try to get my wife of 44 years interested in fishing since were both retired now.
She had only been with me one time back in 71 or 72 and I finally convinced her to go. The lake has
a pavilion with all the amenities ,bathroom, refrigerator, ice machine, microwave and ceiling fans so I
figured after awhile if she got tired she could sit on the pavilion and read( she loves to read). So now
that she had agreed to go I waited for the perfect day, about 70° and a west wind about 3 mph that would
make a perfect drift over the cover in about a 50 yard stretch of the lake I wanted to fish.
We went to the lake that morning about 7am and it was a beautiful day, I showed her about the 12 rods
with slip floats and minnows we would be fishing with and told her not to lift the crappie out of the water
that I would net it. So feeling we were ready I positioned the boat for the drift and baited her hook and got
her set up, we had drifted about 20' and down went her float, I told her when to set the hook and by the
bend of the rod I knew it was a good fish. Yup, I netted a 2 lb Crappie for my wife, I was ecstatic and just knew
I was on the way to having a fishing partner. I pulled the boat back around for a second drift and she catches
a 2 1/2 lb crappie this drift. Well I'm nearly out of my mind with joy just knowing I've got her hooked, I mean
we've fished 20min and she's caught two great fish. I pulled around and set her up for a 3rd drift and we went
through the area but this time she didn't get a bite
That's when she stuck a knife in my heart and twisted it, she said "Watching this float is kinda like watching paint dry"
I knew if she made that statement after 30 min of fishing and catching 2 crappie like that there was no hope. Only
thing to do tuck my tail between my legs, take it like a man, load the boat and head to the house."
