Hi folks. Welcome to Richard Williams Outdoors.
The water levels here on Kentucky Lake went all the way down to 353.9 earlier this week, but is supposed to come back up to 354.4 by the end of the weekend. The surface temperatures are running in the upper 50’s to the lower 60’s. With the cooler nights we have been having, the water temperatures should go down to the mid 50’s by the end of next week.
The crappie fishing and catching has improved quite a bit this week. Several fish have been showing up out on the deeper drops and ledges. I went out on the lake about mid week and caught a limit of crappie fishing the drops and ledges in 18 to 20 feet of water with the baits around 16 feet deep. The best baits for my boat this week have been the baby bass minnow tube tipped with crappie nibbles and a plain jig head with a small minnow on it. The bite was light, so we had to be holding a pole so we could feel the bite. But that is normal for this time of year. The cooler the water, the lighter the bite is going to be.
The leaves are falling off the trees and the nights are starting to get cold. And this has triggered the deer to go into mating season. The bucks are just about in full rut. For the rest of the month, there will be a lot of folks sitting in a tree waiting for that big buck to walk out in front of them. Plus there are a lot of people getting ready for duck season that opens up very shortly. But this is also one of the best times of the year to catch big crappie.
My point to all this, is there are so many things to do in the fall to enjoy the great outdoors. Deer hunting, duck hunting, crappie fishing, or just getting outside to enjoy all the fall colors in the trees and on the ground. There is something for just about every one this time of year. So just get outside and start enjoying what Mother Nature has to offer.
The only downside to this time of year, is with this being mating season for the deer, they will jump out in the road without even thinking about the traffic. Just be careful out there folks and watch for the deer on the roadways.
That’s all the time we have for this week.
See-ya on the water folks.
Thanks for listening.
