That’s the way you have to plan a trip this time of year. If you see a window, even a small one that you might be able to go for a few hours, you need to go put the rods in the boat and go. That was todays deal. I was busy yesterday and of course the temps were nicer. Toady was cloudy, never to clear. The wind was supposed to be about six and fall to four by about noon but then pick back up. Exactly what it did. Water temps were just below 60* and the recent reports were good. Early on it was supposed to be 49* and I wasn’t going out with no sun,a bit of wind and those temps, especially being two weeks post Covid. So I bundled like Nanook of the north and waited til after 9 and met NiNo at the ramp. The wind was lower than predicted and we went about it.

We motored out to where some reports had been good and while I got a few, I knew there was better to be had. Pointed the TM towards where I felt would be better and sat back for the ride. Nino on the other hand had bumped up his TM a couple of extra numbers and was there long before me. My thought was that it wouldn’t be the first time that I found fish while I was heading for fish. As I got closer I saw him standing up and then reaching for the net. He’d found some. He and I moved around an area of about a half a mile and maybe 150 yards wide and had a really good time. He started hollering at one point and about that time the only ultralight in my boat started making drag music. Nino had three rods down and they weren’t coming in quick. Stripers! I only got the one that was way bigger than my size 13, but he got into them 2 or 3 times. It’s great fun on the light gear we carry.

I never got into a real flurry but steadily caught good fish. I was keeping a few today for myself and a couple of other folks that had asked nicely. The ramp I like to use is a county ramp with a couple of attendants riding around on gators and keeping the place better than average. One of them was going by as we were tying down and I pointed to the cooler and then to him. His eyes lit up and he got a few. I filleted four for myself and a neighbor got another four. I had kept eleven good ones and it was just right.

All totaled we fished less than four hours and I’m sure that I’d gotten thirty or so, not all were large as the one picture shows. Nino was busier than I was and he was more in the forties count. The rain spit a couple of times but not enough to be a bother and everything went just right enough. Hope y’all can find a window and get out for a few. Look for me and my newly named Jon boat,”Basic Betty”. Wave when you see me and til then…….Skeet
