• What is your favorite color? - by TJ Stallings

Better yet. What are fish looking for? That would require us to think about what fish seek. We all know the theory “dark colors for dark conditions”. The other train of thought is “opaque colors in dark conditions” or “transparent colors in light conditions”. Set those theories aside a while.

Let us think like a fish for a few minutes. Okay, you are fish. You are swimming along just off the bottom. Your eyes are on top of your head, so you gaze upward constantly. The barometric pressure is steady. You are a happy, yet hungry fish.

You see something. The sun’s position behind this critter reveals little at first. Then you see a constant flash of the Road Runner blade. It appears to be breathing as it makes its descent. Then the white body becomes visible. The lure changes direction and begins to swim parallel to the bottom. Your fins expand and you charge the lure.

Wake up. Are you back? What did you learn? Fish look up all the time. The shad, shiners, and minnows they eat, have a white belly. Fish are naturally trained to seek white bellies.

The theory has repeated itself so many times personally, it makes us chuckle. We will throw a half-dozen colors; switch to white and boom, fish on!

Confirmation came again as we tested the Reality Shad Buffet Rig®. Both Ron and I have not caught a fish on the top lure. The bottom lure has been the exclusive winner. This will change as more anglers fish the lure for aggressive species like Sea Trout and Smallmouth Bass.

Buffet Rig in a white version called “Nanner Puddin”

White variations work well like pearl, albino shad, Tennessee shad, black shad, opening night, and silver phantom.

Mitigating factors about the white theory include species that eat a healthy bug diet; like panfish and brook trout for example.

Now get out there and think like a fish.

    Blessings, -TJ

The only one in my box that goes against this is the Chartreuse. It makes no sense but I'm guessing the visibility factor is what makes it work so well. Like the new set up, you guys always on the edge....... Tim.

That may explain why the red/white jigs work so well for me. There is the red of the bleeding gills, and the white of the vulnerable underbelly.

wouldn't white tend to blend into the background of the bright light above..
isn't that way bait fish are white on the bottom..to hide..
      just a thought

Thanks for your thoughts guys. Trust me, my personal arsenal looks like a crayon factory exploded. One of my favorites is black-chartreuse, especially in tannin-stained waters.
I just think anglers forget about white combinations when it should be one of the first to test. A chartreuse head with a white body or like Lotech Joe, red head-white combinations have been a killer here on the Alabama and Coosa Rivers. Blessings, -tj

Went to my home lake, Randleman Lake in NC on Friday morning and used white bettle spins and rooster tails and by 12:00 I had 21 crappie over 8 inches

If I take more than 5 colors, I get confused and can't remember what I'm doin' in my kayak on the water.

I have many "favorite" colors. Different shades of chartruese, yellow, pearl white, black with green and red glitter, smoke with black and silver glitter. These are my colors to start with but my true favorite color is whatever the fish want on the day I am fishing. Sometimes I have to get away from favorite colors to find what they really want.

I like white, black, and green. I use the green (dark) in a fly pattern that mimicks a fry.
