I made a solo trip to D'arbonne today. The weather man told me it was 27 degrees with 1 mph winds when I launched shortly after daylight. I dropped the trolling motor and started working the channel, fishing 15-20 feet down using a double rig, jig and plastic on the bottom and a #2 long shank aberdeen and a shiner on top with a 1/2 oz egg sinker between. My first fish was a nice thick 13" crappie followed by a big drum. Another 13" crappie and another drum followed, the drum snapping my Russ Bailey crappie wizard in half. Luckily I had a back up. By 10:30 I had 4 crappie in the box and had caught 3 drum. I tied to stump and tried shiners under a slip bobber for a while with no luck. The fishing was slow until mid afternoon, then it was like someone flipped a switch. It started with pops at my bait with a few hook ups and and ended up being a pretty aggressive bite. The bigger fish would either hit real light or come up with the bait and all they wanted was shiners. I quit about 4:30 with 15 fish, 5 that were over 13". Very few boats out today and nobody fishing around me. I got a PM from a local saying him and everyone he talked to got skunked today so I feel pretty good about my day. I plan on doing it again tomorrow, weather permitting.
