Oh my goodness it has gotten hot in a hurry. I left work at 5:15 and the truck thermometer said 93. Six days in a row of mid 90 degree weather, with very little wind to boot. The boat followed me back to work at lunch and was on the lake by 5:30. Wading in at the launch it felt like bath water! I have been targeting Bluegill for the past month and miss the bite of old speckle belly. Looking back at last years fishing log, I noticed that exactly 364 days ago I caught Crappie vertical jigging 20+ft deep brush. Same lake level as last year...Check. Same jig tied on...Check. Same location..Check. SlabSauce....Check. First drop to the bottom, reel up once, wait, wiggle, THUMP. I never get tired of the bite of a Slab Crappie, it keeps me going back for more. I visited several marked brushpiles and lay downs and found fish inhabiting most. They were not stacked up by any means, but I did manage a nice mess in my limited time. 16 came up from their summer haunts and said hello, with 10 making the cut for a ride home. Size was surprisingly above average and only a few looked like they needed to eat a sandwich!

Big Black Crappie of the evening, note the 7 spines. He was healthy.
?
Big White Crappies of the evening, note 6 spines. Males, but a little skinny.

Oh and did I mention it was HOT? Here is a screen shot from my front depth finder at 8:30pm, as the sun was setting, the water temperature was 89.5 on the main channel in deep water.

Be safe, wear your PFD, and stay hydrated. Summer is here.
