• Two Limits - by Corker

Two limits by 10:00, that is!

AnchorMan & I decided to try out the new & improved launch ramp at LCR today--very nice work! The ramp's now paved to the water line (at least 10' below full pool.) A couple of loads of small rocks were dumped off the end and spread toward the channel, allowing trailers to ease into the deep water (rather than take a nose dive off the end of the ramp.) Launch & retrieval were a piece of cake.

The weather was magnificent--and actually a bit cool before the sun came up.

Breezes topped out well below 10 mph and the temp didn't get past the mid-80's. Water clarity was excellent, as usual.

We decided to test the range of my 4 batteries by heading past the pump house and running due east until we hit the stop light in Toano.

We saw very few boats today (because most people know you can't catch crappies in the summer time), but on the way down the lake, we passed a number of the locals headed out for the day (they don't get holidays, weekends, or vacation, either.)

The lake keeps going and going and going until it's too shallow to fish. At that point, we turned around and started looking for 14' to 18' water. Structure helped when available,

but plenty of fish were suspended in open water. As soon as we found the right depth, there were the fish! They were into minnows and jigs. Any color jig worked fine - as long as it was blue. The magic depth was 10' to 12'.

It wasn't long before fish were jumping into the boat. Here's a double.

Mr. Lucky immediately landed a triple.

Shortly after the triple, he had a quad. (Fish and poles were going in so many directions that there wasn't time for a picture.)

For variety, he then landed a 12.25" ding-a-ling, but that's not his luckiest minute of the day.

Later in the day Mr. Lucky lost a nice crappie when the leader somehow pulled loose from the hook. Fifteen minutes later, he caught the fish again and got his hook back. (What good would a picture do! Who's going to believe a tale like this unless you see it with your own eyes?)

Just to set the record straight, we didn't catch two limits. It was actually three. 75 (probably more) out of the 87 crappie we caught today were keeper size. Here are the two limits that will be featured in fish frys tomorrow and later this week.
