• Several first's for the New Year

My son in law Mike was at the house early and we got to watch another wonderful sunrise as we motored toward the bridge and Monroe. We finally got the Geezer Breezes this morning, flat calm for the first time in a long while. We went outside the fenders and turned back downriver pulling and pushing jigs and a couple of cranks. Nada. Cleared the RR bridge and still nothing. As we began to stow rods we got one to go in the box. Put up the big rods and broke out the casting rods and began to cast anything that looked fishy. Mike had never done this before and is a quick study and listens very well. I described what would happen when he got a hit and what to look for on a lift bite and how to just concentrate on staying buttoned up when a good fish was on. Once was all it took. We pitched curl tails just cuz they fell a little slower with the 1/32 heads. I heard him say"Here we go" and he had his first while casting and letting it fall through the water column. Fought it well, good fish, and his net man got it to the boat. He turns to me and with the excitement of a young person says" it was just like you said it would be, the thump and all. That was cool!!". We pitched around and got several more, I think we had 11 in the box at about 10:30 and things had slowed down, so we headed for the lake. By this time the wind had showed it's ugly head and in talking with Crappieday a couple of times during the day, hoped we could find a few more up where he was. Good to see you today Andy. Long story short; by the time we got together it was too windy to be any fun and my bird dog was back to following me around again so we headed home. Glad we left when we did, wouldn't have been fun had it gotten any worse. Mike and I caught the 2 that measured 14" and another that was very close to that. The 2 biggest ones came from the exact same spot about an hour apart. The final count on the clicker was 18 and the box had 12 which went home to be dinner another day. He got some, I got some and the neighbor across the street got some for her and Mom to share. I did the electric knife part and Mike learned to remove the ribs. All told, an exceptional day for me. If this is a precursor for the New Year, I'm ready. I've been blessed with people to share what I love with. Thanks for taking the time to read this, I know I ramble some.....Skeet
