• The Live Bait Dilema - by Nic Norton

Live minnows are hands-down one of the best presentations for filling a stringer with crappie, yet every crappie fisherman, at some point in his or her fishing career, has faced the problem of dead minnows. The peak of summer is the toughest time to keep bait alive, but all through the year we struggle with this issue. Everyone also knows the more lively the minnow on your hook, the more attractive that minnow is to the crappie watching from below. So what is the secret to keeping your bait alive and happy throughout the year?

Most anglers opt for a bucket in the cooler months, sometimes adding a portable aerator as the weather heats up. This is an effective means much of the time, but lugging around a 5-gallon bucket full of water can get old quickly. For boat anglers, buckets get in the way and often end up getting knocked over when the action is hot. Now the boat is full of thrashing minnows and the race is on to get them back in the water before they shrivel up.

Brad Whitehead, an accomplished guide and crappie angler in Alabama, has found a new way to keep his minnows swimming. In this short video, he explains and demonstrates the most effective way to store minnows in a boat to keep them lively even in the dog days of summer.
