• A day on the lake with SeaRay and the Dabber

Ray can do the report if he wishes, here's a couple of pics of our day.

And SeaRay did post the following report:

Well John the fish were much more hungry for Tim's jig than mine, even though we were using the same jig.

We hit the water right at sunrise and had great weather with a cool cloud cover. However, bright sunny days seem to push the fish into the brush better, so we had to work for our limit.

If you jig brush piles you are going to get hung up occasionally. Smart me had one reel set up with braid and a light wire hook on the jig. I was able to retrieve every hangup with no trouble and never lost the jig. I also had not the first touch on it. If I was more proficient at this technique I may have had better luck, but I switched back to the mono and caught fish so the jury is still out on this topic. It takes a bit of practice to get the knack of this type fishing as I was reminded today. I have taken friends who are good fishermen on this style fishing and watched them struggle to get (or feel) the bite. It is a fun method and feeling that thump is what it is all about. So each time I learn a bit more and it is fun watching someone like Tim who is very good at his haul the in. We fished dozens of piles and some held no fish and a couple we got 3 to 5 fish. We were in less than 10 FOW all day and some of the best piles were in 5 or 6 FOW, so the theory of having to fish deep in the hot summer apparently was never shared with the Santee Crappie.
We fished hard till about 3 PM and loaded up to head home.
Many thanks to the Inkdabber for a great trip,

Since you don't see me with huge catches very often I thouht I would close with a picture of a nice one I caught and another cooler shot and you can actually see my name on the cooler.

Randy we used the Rooty Tooty 309s like you won off me last year. I am keeping my mouth shut this year. I have absolutely no idea what kind of team we will put on the field, but everyone will know Thursday night. We play North Carolina at 6PM (EDT) on ESPN.

What a great report with some awesome pictures!! It looks like you two had a great day on the water.

With the new addition to the family I haven't had the time to fish this summer like past years, but I love single poling in the summer heat. I've always found that some of the shallowest, most unsuspecting, structure will hold crappie in the dog days of the summer. And you are right, there's nothing like feeling that thump!

That's an interesting tid bit on the braided line. I use braid on all my jig poles but I tie a fluorocarbon leader on. I love the braid for the added sensitivity and the fluoro has less stretch than mono. I used to use mono exclusively but switched over a few years back. I can say first hand that I've seen line type and size make big differences in a days fishing.

If the stars line up properly I plan to be on the water this coming Saturday morning. It'll be the first time in nearly two months my boat has seen water other than a few sprinkles of rain. I believe in going to reline a pole with mono just to see what difference it makes.

What pound test do you use Ink? I used to use 4 lb when I fished mono on the jig pole.

Derek, I use 8 pound test the majority of the time. I really have taken a liking to Vanish. When fishing heavy vegetation, or when the big fish are real shallow in the spring, I use 20 pound braid so I can hoss the fish up and out of the cover without fear of breaking my line. I haven't seen any reduction in bites due to braid. Of coarse, the water is usually somewhat stained early in the year.
