If you’re like me, your boat is engine is something you fear losing from time to time. I can’t help but have nightmares about it blowing up out on the lake. I’ve had it happen to me on several (3) occasions. It’s got to be one of the most frustrating feelings you’ll ever encounter. That blow-up sound is something you do not want to hear. When it happens there’s only one thing that brings comfort; having a good and honest marine mechanic. Here are a few tips when looking for a boat mechanic.
- Excellent Understanding of your Engine Make & Model
- You should ask questions; do you have the analysis software that diagnoses the trouble codes? Most engines manufactured after 2000 have some type of computer module that controls most of the engine functions. A mechanic worth his salt has been through the training to analyze codes.
- Reasonable Hourly Rate
- All marine mechanics rates are high so to speak. I like the ones that give you a free estimate of problem and the number of hours required to complete the job. I can then make an intelligent decision to use this person or not.
- If it’s an engine rebuild I’ll shop around.
- With the advent of the internet, we all have access to replacement parts. Some mechanics stock parts in their shop. If you’re in a hurry for the repair this is an advantage.
- I like a mechanic that inspects the replacement parts and guarantees their work. I don’t like taking my boat back for the same thing because they didn’t fix the problem initially. Some mechanics are parts changers; they can’t diagnose what’s causing the problem, they simply replace the worn parts and send you on your way. A few fishing trips and the problem reoccurs.
- When my boat breaks down, I want it fixed yesterday. If it’s during peak fishing time, any mechanic worth his salt will have a boat lot full. If they have sufficient help, you can expect a reasonable turnaround time.
- I’ve had full engine block replacements done and returned within 7 days. Lower unit replacements done and returned within 5 days.
- Access to a Good Parts Supplier
- Reasonable Guarantee of Parts & Labor
- Reasonable Turnaround Time
Just like I do in most of my articles, I make my recommendations. My marine mechanic shop is Ivy Marine, location at 143 Fannin Rd, Flowood, MS 39232. Phone number is (601) 988-1283. Mike Ivy is the owner. I can honestly say this man will not cheat you. He’ll diagnose your problem and give you his best estimate of what the repair costs are going to be. For all you guys that run older boats, he’s your man. You can tell he’s a good mechanic by the number of boats he repairs year in and out.
Mike has one problem that I’m working with him on; he refers to everyone with Sir, Ma’am, Mr., or Ms. I keep telling him Mr. Williams was my daddy. I’m just Bernard. His explanation is, “That’s the way I was raised”.
If you need an excellent boat mechanic and you’re around the Central MS area; don’t hesitate to contact my friend Mike Ivy. Tell him I sent you; if you have any problems with him, let me know. He’s passionate about his work. He doesn’t advertise other than word of mouth. Once he does you a good job; tell your friends.
If you need your prop repaired, the Prop Shop is located in the same building. David Bridges is the owner; he’ll repair your prop at a very reasonable price. You can call him at (601) 939-0035 and arrange shipment. Propellers are expensive; he can customize your current prop without you having to spend a ton on a new prop.
