• A Good Boat Mechanic is Priceless By Bernard Williams

If you’re like me, your boat is engine is something you fear losing from time to time. I can’t help but have nightmares about it blowing up out on the lake. I’ve had it happen to me on several (3) occasions. It’s got to be one of the most frustrating feelings you’ll ever encounter. That blow-up sound is something you do not want to hear. When it happens there’s only one thing that brings comfort; having a good and honest marine mechanic. Here are a few tips when looking for a boat mechanic.

    • Excellent Understanding of your Engine Make & Model
      • You should ask questions; do you have the analysis software that diagnoses the trouble codes? Most engines manufactured after 2000 have some type of computer module that controls most of the engine functions. A mechanic worth his salt has been through the training to analyze codes.

    • Reasonable Hourly Rate
    • All marine mechanics rates are high so to speak. I like the ones that give you a free estimate of problem and the number of hours required to complete the job. I can then make an intelligent decision to use this person or not.
    • If it’s an engine rebuild I’ll shop around.
    • With the advent of the internet, we all have access to replacement parts. Some mechanics stock parts in their shop. If you’re in a hurry for the repair this is an advantage.
    • I like a mechanic that inspects the replacement parts and guarantees their work. I don’t like taking my boat back for the same thing because they didn’t fix the problem initially. Some mechanics are parts changers; they can’t diagnose what’s causing the problem, they simply replace the worn parts and send you on your way. A few fishing trips and the problem reoccurs.
    • When my boat breaks down, I want it fixed yesterday. If it’s during peak fishing time, any mechanic worth his salt will have a boat lot full. If they have sufficient help, you can expect a reasonable turnaround time.
    • I’ve had full engine block replacements done and returned within 7 days. Lower unit replacements done and returned within 5 days.
    • Access to a Good Parts Supplier
    • Reasonable Guarantee of Parts & Labor
    • Reasonable Turnaround Time

Just like I do in most of my articles, I make my recommendations. My marine mechanic shop is Ivy Marine, location at 143 Fannin Rd, Flowood, MS 39232. Phone number is (601) 988-1283. Mike Ivy is the owner. I can honestly say this man will not cheat you. He’ll diagnose your problem and give you his best estimate of what the repair costs are going to be. For all you guys that run older boats, he’s your man. You can tell he’s a good mechanic by the number of boats he repairs year in and out.
Mike has one problem that I’m working with him on; he refers to everyone with Sir, Ma’am, Mr., or Ms. I keep telling him Mr. Williams was my daddy. I’m just Bernard. His explanation is, “That’s the way I was raised”.
If you need an excellent boat mechanic and you’re around the Central MS area; don’t hesitate to contact my friend Mike Ivy. Tell him I sent you; if you have any problems with him, let me know. He’s passionate about his work. He doesn’t advertise other than word of mouth. Once he does you a good job; tell your friends.
If you need your prop repaired, the Prop Shop is located in the same building. David Bridges is the owner; he’ll repair your prop at a very reasonable price. You can call him at (601) 939-0035 and arrange shipment. Propellers are expensive; he can customize your current prop without you having to spend a ton on a new prop.

Bernie, That's good to know. I've had nothing but good luck with Leo and the boys at King Marine in Cape Girardeau, MO. Cape is in SE MO. and very near I-55. Easy to get to. Good turn around time and very knowlegable guys. They take pride in their work and are fun to work with. Their work area looks like a tornado went thru it, but those boys know where every single little thing is and what its for. I always said a clean desk is from a guy too worried about a clean desk instead of getting work done. If you need help in the Southeast Mo area contact King Marine at 573-334-6755 and tell'em Jim from Perryville sent you. You'll get the brother-in-law discount.....an extra 25% charge!!lol

I just got thru getting my boat fixed at a cost above $2000.00 and the mechanic that fixed it is great. Kelly Norton has a business named Kelly's Outboard Repair. He is located on Highway 300 on the left just before you cross Smoak Bridge. Kelly will definitely treat you right and he is very fair with his prices. My boat runs great now. We are so fortunate to have such a boat mechanic like Kelly here on Lake Blackshear.

I disagree with a free estimate. You get what you pay for IMO. A well run shop does not give aways it's time. They have to be profitable to stay in .
Price should only be part of your decision on a rebuild. There's more to a rebuild than Price.
Part's quality is a issues that I would leave up to the shop I use, not the internet.

Hey jig rig I fully agree with you. My mechanic charged a fee for the estimate and actually came under his estimate and he used top quality parts.

I guess I'm lucky. The bus mechanic at the high school where I teach just happens to work on boats and motors on the side. Good man with extensive knowledge about Mercury outboards. GTT

The only time you truly appreciate a good mechanic is after you've been taken advantage of and basically had your money stolen and the problem is still there when they're done. This happened to me. I guess they saw me coming. The next one was a keeper. Diagnosed in the driveway and told me more in the first 5 minutes than the others figured out in 3 months. That was in '09 and I haven't had the need to go back. Here in Middle Tennessee I know of no one more fair and accurate than buddy at Winchester Stereo and Marine. An unusual name for a great business. 931-962-2808 will put you in touch with one of the best.
