• A Cold Day on the Water

Matt and I roughed out pretty tough conditions this morning. It was a really slow bite. After battling the wind and the cold, we were about to throw in the towel. Then the sun came out and the fish started biting for us.

We ended up with 3 good ones and broke several off. We also kept another 12 keepers and threw back at least that many.

Matt must have broke off 10 times when setting the hook. It was always at the knot. We were both using the same kind of line and knot. The only difference was that I use 10" Ozarks and he uses 11" Ozarks. The line was new Mr. Crappie 6 pound line. I only broke off once. We also noticed that ice on the guides appeared to be abrading the line. But it always broke at the knot. Think it was the extra backbone in the 11 footer that made him break off so much?

I use 11 footers exclusively and have never had any problems with knot breaking due to hook setting. You guys must be raring back on those poles, or hooking something other than fish (brush). Unless the water is extremely clear, maybe you should increase your strength to 8 or 10 pound test. I prefer those line grades and have seen no drop off in fish catches due to them.
