I was reeling a smaller crappie out from under the dock when this guy grabbed it... I must have had the crappie hooked in the top lip or something... It was 22 1/2" long and I caught it on 2lb line lol... I started catching a lot more crappie after I caught it too. It must have been terrorizing them... Not the desired species but still fun
Very nice beasty. That's a tactic I use. If the bite is on then suddenly disappear I switch to a larger lure and try to casting for something bigger, sometimes a big fish is there and you go home with a fun story.
There is a backwater spillway along the river here where I live that I use to fish regularly. I can not tell you how many huge bass I would say in the 10 lb range and better have done this to me in the past. I never had one take a crappie, but bream and stripe were the ticket here. They always either broke my 4 lb line or they never had the hook and turned the fish loose. I was never lucky enough to get one in like you have. I hardly ever fish the place anymore due to overcrowding and the wildlife management agency making a mess out of the place.
That's one you'll always remember! Once it really happens to you, it seems very logical that it could happen. It's just a bigger fish eating a smaller fish. Happens everyday in nature, right? Wait and see, though, how many people don't believe you when you retell it. It happened to me probably 20 years ago, but it was a little goggle eye I was reeling in. Caught them both. No one believed me except my dad because he was in the boat with me and saw it happen. Good for you. GTT
I hope you had it mounted . It is a trophy and a once in a life time experience thats for sure . I will go out on a limb and say it is well over 7 pounds .
