Don't set the hook when using circle hooks. Just reel up the slack and load the rod. It designed to get them in the corner of the mouth

Maybe your using to small a hook? I think mine are 6/0 hooks. Don't know about setting the hook. I have all my life and still do it but have read in different places it is wrong thing to do. I don't set them to hard though, might make a difference. 70 yrs of setting hook's has made it a normal thing to do but watch some videos on you tube and no one sets the hook! Another thing I learned is don't bury the hook in the bait. I use mostly chicken breast and have gone to smaller thinner pieces and run the hook through two times at most and leave a lot of hook exposed out of the bait.
