Drifting lets you stay in the active fish. When they hit there's no question you are getting a bite unless you go through a school of those 2 to 3 lb blues. You will learn over time by watching your locator the position the fish are in ( high in the water column or close to the bottom ) when to expect bites. With the lake flooded and the water temp back down, the thermocline will be less evident so there will be fish closer to the bottom. We also have better luck in clearer water vs. muddy water. We catch fish in muddy water but do better when it's murky or clear. If the fish are way up in the water from 4 to 12 ft below the surface, we may drift big slip corks on a couple of poles down to the depth they are feeding. Caught a lot of fish this way especially on big flats.

Drift rig your using is reminiscent of the same rigs we use for trout in the white river system. Just let the weight tick the bottom on occasion to know your at the right depth. I was looking forward getting into trying the drifting for blues this year, buying a couple of drift socks, but the high water/trash makes me back off for now.
See the lake has only gone down 1/4" today, so its going to be awhile before it gets back in shape. Good fishing below the dam though where all the fish are washing down.

High water doesn't really affect the bite drifting as much as the muddy water. Lake is not real bad on the south end as far as clarity. Since lake is falling finally, debris will start moving to the bank out of the main lake. I think drifting will be good if the wind goes down, That's the big issue now.

Caught these blues drifting a few days ago before all the ramps closed. Usually run 2 poles with double hooks and 2 with single hooks until I determine what they want that day. l also run a few hooks with cut bait and some with whole shad nose hooked. Best bait I've found is a fillet off the side of big shad in the 8 t 10 inch range and then cutting the fillet into 1 inch strips length wise. We string the strip on a circle hook and leave a tail that spins in the water. This is deadly on big blues. We always soak our shad in dead red. We run the single hooks out where they are closer to the bottom and the double hooks from a 60 to 90 degree angle from the boat. We don't keep any over 15 to 20 lbs.
