First let me say I Love me some Catfish. Now here is my question. If you were to make up a catfish bait recipe from scratch what would you put in it? It would need to be firm for tight lining and jugging.

Not to poopoo your idea but I've found that it's not worth making when there are some excellent products on the market that work and are pretty durn cheap. Sonny's is my favorite.

Have not heard of Sonny's. My making it is just something to play with. I am retired so I get to play with just about anything I want to. Within reason (if I have the money. LOL).

I agree with chuckauten, do some searches online and you will find many different recipes. I like to watch the YouTube recipes because you get to actually see it better versus just reading a recipe and trying it..
Check out catfish connection on line. The sell sell items to make bait with. They used to sell cheese scraps by the 5 gallon pail. Also oils to add. I would use some cattail fibers to make it stick together also. It seems lots of dip bait companies add that. Can not go wrong with ground up shad bodies. Good luck. It is always fun to catch fish with product you made yourself.
Stay simple pure blood bait , poultry liver , or cut fish. Never understood everyone wanting to make smelly concoctions ?![]()

I've got a friend who swears by her "liver loaf" bait. It's pretty simple. A container of chicken livers (about 1 1/4#), a 1/4 cup of molasses, and a loaf of white bread. Chop the livers and toss with the molasses. Tear the bread into large pieces, then use your hands to work it into the liver until you get a uniform mixture that can be formed into balls. I've also heard of using melted velveeta with livers, garlic and flour.

Well I had planned to start with some chicken liver, garlic maybe add some corn flakes or flour as a binder. So I was just curious about what others would add to it.

Limburger (spelling?) melt in a pot with a little milk, add enough flour to make a it stick, you can also add some oats to help kneading it together. Will flat out load the boat with channel cats. Been fishing with it for years.
