Fresh cut shad for channels and blues. Live bluegill or bullhead for flatheads. Good eating size channels in the summer....no faster fishing than Sonny's Dip Bait.
Sonneys dip bait. I have used it for 15 years imo nothing better.

I have good luck with beef liver cut into strips. Its tough and you can texas rig it. Holds up very well.

Favorite would be cut gizzard shad, but fresh or frozen are real hard to get up here. Nightcrawlers work until the bait shops start carrying the decoy suckers for the muskie nuts. Cut sucker is second choice after the shad. The bigger the sucker, the tougher the skin and the harder it is for pesks to steal the bait. Haven't tried the preserved shads yet. We have had some limited luck with grocery store smelt, too.
We have taken a few on nightcrawlers, but they haven't really started to bite around here yet this spring. 2/0 circle hooks for me.
