tommarow, im going to the store to buy some groceries..... and maybe some catfish bait. i want to get stuff that will catch channel catfish, and the small ones too, because i only have medium action gear and 8 pound test. what should i get for the catfish?

cheese, hotdogs, beef chicken turkey pork liver, chicken gizzards, shrimp, all those work. as for the soap bait never tried it. you will be surprised how big a fish you can land with 8lb test line. the key is to not over hoss the fish. keep pressure on the fish and it will come to you.

know this is a little late but as for Soap buy ZOTE a soap made in Mexico. It is the high lard content that makes the cats bite the higher the lard or to be more correct fat content the better they like it. Ivory works but Zote is the best.

Now as far as grocery store bait. The cheap hot dogs now for the making them the best bait on the lake. cut them in to 3/8 to 1/2 inch pieces. Put in a zip loc style bag sprinkle granulated Garlic over them and let sit over night. Catfish love them!!!! Granulated Garlic is more intents than powdered garlic. It took a Friend that has a catering business to convince me of this. The doctored hot dogs are what I use on Caddo lake it is my number one goto bait. I will have to post my recipe for dried chicken liver catfish bait. My second favorite grocery store bait.

Cut the chicken livers in two or three chunks depending on the size hooks you'll be useing. Take an old cookie sheet and put garlic salt on it(use the Dollar Store garlic salt its cheap). Put a layer of liver on the salt and then cover with a thick layer of garlic salt. Set this in the sun all day where your pets can't reach em. The salt toughens the liver and the catfish love the garlic flavor and smell. Put the liver in a sealer bag and refridgerate till you go fishin.
I'm having an "out of money" experience.

8 lb test is going to be a bit small if there's any cover in the area. You can get a cheap Ugly Stick combo at WalMart that will last you 6 or 8 years. Something that will handle 15 lb test at least.

Chicken livers, shrimp, hot dogs all work. Soap is more for trot lines where it sits a long time, not on a rod.

lucky for me, because the only cover on the pond im fishing is a submerged fence. and i already have a ugly stik, but mines snapped in two when i set the hook on a bass. odd, considering it's suppost to be the strongest rod ever..... anyway, im giving it another chance, but im getting the ultra light version.

I think they have a lifetime warranty, or something close. Email/call them they should send you a replacement.

Nothing out of the grocery store beats Turkey Liver and Chicken Liver is a close second. I catch hundreds of Channel Catfish on baited holes every summer. If you will read my posts you will be a believer.
