Sorry it took so long to reply....
well... i have never fished black butte . I would love to go up and check it out! I'm not sure if it's the best crappie lake in Cali. (N. Cali maybe) but like you, i have heard folks braggin about this lake for years (not recently) but have never seen any proof . Not like other spots when fishin buddies would come by the house with ice chest full of limits and asking/braggin "when u want to go?" willing to take me but not tell me where ...lol. I think the big advantage this lake has is it's distance from everybody and everything as well as good numbers of crappie. There isn't much fishing pressure there. The closer u get to the bay area the the more fishing pressure u have. I mean the bayarea has over 7 million folks in a 7000sq. miles area. But not many of those folks are willing to travel 3hrs to to take a chance to catch crappie in Northern Ca.(thank God)... Salmon, sturgeon, white sea bass or hali's maybe. There only a few of us traveling that far. I say give it a try!
