    Default Line question

Typically I fish with 4 lb or 6 lb mono filament. I decided to try braid (10 lb) with fluorocarbon (6 lb). I'm using a ten foot rod. I broke the fluorocarbon setting the hook on three different fish yesterday. Should I go to a heavier fluorocarbon? Or do I look more to the drag to control the issue? I realize there is no stretch with braid.
I only fish the two best days of the year, when its raining and when its not!

Personally, I'd just use mono as the leader. But, if you think you need fluorocarbon .... backing off the drag will compensate for the lack of stretch.

Curious though ... where on the fluorocarbon leader is the break occurring ?? With braid/fluoro combo, why are you setting the hook with very much power (both are low stretch lines) ??

I do have one outfit rigged with 10lb test hi-vis braid and the braid is tied directly to the jig ... stiff 7' rod ... and I don't "set the hook" by jerking the rod, but just sweep the rod about a foot as I continue to reel. (this outfit is used solely for casting)

Hey, I have one rod set up very similar to what you're describing... I use 10lb hivis braid with 6lb flouro as a leader. I've never broken it setting the hook and a lot of my friends poke fun at me for how aggressively I do it...

I do fish with my drag pretty loose, but even if it wasn't I can't imagine breaking 6lb line with a hook set. The only time I've ever broken my leader is when it's intentional because I'm hopelessly snagged. It take a pretty strong pull to break the line.

Maybe try a different brand of flouro? Or like above poster said maybe switch it to mono.

Yeah...I stopped using fluorocarbon, it does break a lot, I just use mono now for a leader.

I'm using long rods 14', its like you said a sweeping motion to set the hook. I really couldn't believe it broke, same hook set with mono filament line. The line broke just above the knot. The bite this summer has been particularly slow for us. Thought I'd try fluorocarbon in hopes of producing more fish.

I'm wondering if the line is breaking or if the knot isn't holding? I think flouro is more prone to the knot slipping than mono.

I'd think this is what happened. hard for me to imagine a crappie big enough to break 6# line by setting the hook!
