Do the biggest crappie hang out in the top of the trees or the bottom?

Been having quite a bit of success using Mega Live and fishing brush piles with small plastics. I haven't really been able to decide whether the bigger fish hang out in the top of the brush pile or the bottom? Or do they really not care? Thoughts?

From what I've seen, bigger Crappie tend to stay "down in" the brushpile, in the presence of smaller fish. Generally those fish at the top portion or close to (but not "in" the brush) are on alert for any passing food source. Also of note, is that "big" Crappie can be "loners". They are subject to hanging around a small, isolated piece of cover ... as well as roaming open water.

In my experience the bigger fish will be towards the bottom, but they are usually roaming in and out and don't stay put very long

That changes with season , temps ,and water color . I have seen them plastered to the bottom then moved up to top when sun warmed up on a cold day

fall fish on the feed bag sometimes situate high in the water column , most of the time they seem to be under smaller fish though , but not always , like stated above

I see them at times on surface using livescope . No set rule even in deep water . They do like to suspend but seen them sitting on bottom around nothing too .

I've seen them in both locations. I learned that if they are up top, they are ready to eat. Every fish my buddy boated, all sitting at the top and larger than all the fish I was pulling further down. This time of the year I caught 3 fish in a 100 yard stretch, 2 on top of two different steak beds and one on the bottom under a limb. There was no temp change this all took place in less than 30 mins. If you have Live Scope and see a bulge up top, it's probably a slab waiting to get caught.
