Actually you can tell the difference between a male and female during spawn as the male will be darker than the female.

That works pretty good for White Crappie, as the males can get almost completely black. However, on the Black Crappie, the coloration difference is sometimes so slight that only a bulging belly is the key.

Depends on the waters but here we have a problem with too many Crappie stunting growth rates.
