Goats turn for some petting
22 years and 253,000 some odd miles, under light recreational use the brake pads on these trucks were pretty much lifetime. I replaced the front pads for the first time last year when I did wheel bearing/hub assemblies. Felt wrong, they still had a lot of thickness. But anyhow, the last year or so my park brake had got weak, barely holding. I’ve been gathering tools and parts, dove into it this weekend instead of going fishing. 30+ wind gusts made that a little easier decision. I launch load by myself usually, heavy boat and manual trans truck, I like engine off in low AND a park brake that holds while sitting on ramp while I’m in the boat. The Dana 80 in this truck uses separate drum shoes inside the disk rotor/hub for park brake. I really would have bet the lining had separated from the backing with the way they’d been acting. But what I’m seeing, just adjusting them up might have been enough. But reaching through the backing plate to do that is super difficult, especially if you haven’t seen it with the hub off and figured out which way it needs to turn. I just had to see what was going on for myself. Took the opportunity to replace the seals in the hubs while I was in there that deep.

And let me tell ya, the 8 bolts in end of axle were cheater pipe tight from factory.
Pads and shoes both had plenty of life left. But done bought em, and into it this far, new ones are going in.

Well my miserable life.
Drove a shakedown run into town and back, passenger side brake caliper is hanging, getting hot. I fully should have expected this, as when I went through the front end last year had the same experience. Lesson learned, never trust old brake calipers on these newer vehicles. When you push them back for new pads, better than 50% chance they are gonna stick. Waiting on rebuilt ones now. Do as I say, not as I do, and save yourself a headache
I DID take the opportunity to order all 3 rubber flex brake lines, one on each caliper and one center above the axle. Since I’m bleeding brakes anyway…

On a more positive note, before the test run, wifey helped me give the goat her bi-yearly bath. She’s mostly white again. Looks good sitting in the driveway even if I can’t drive her.
