Change the filter and fluid first.
I have an 04 f150 auto trans, seems to drive fine forward, but put it in reverse and it will move, but give it some gas and it just revs up with no increase in speed.
Any ideas? I checked the fluid and it's pink and doesn't stink like it's burnt.
The truck has 160K on the original trans. Adjustment or rebuild?

Don't know anything about that trans but I have a 93 GMC 4x4 that the trans would kick out of gear like you put it in neutral. Turned out to be a speed sensor wire that was broken down internally. No visible signs outside, had to probe to find it. Of course this was after installing new speed sensor- just my luck. My son still drives truck to this day and it runs great. Just something you might check.....
Since these Transmissions went electronic I'm at a loss. I plan to have it checked out this week.

Not sure about the transmission but if you have the 5.4 motor you need to be leary. My 04 is getting a new motor as we speak. Bought it about a year and half ago and it has always had a "ticking" noise which multiple people told me was "normal". I am no mechanic by any means so I just took them at their word...sure wish now I would have had it check out or started reading some forums. Now that I have had my issues I see that everyone in the world was talking about it online!! Day late and dollar short again in my case. Seems 04-07 year models with the 5.4 had a terrible time with cam phasers and mine shot craps a couple weeks ago. Mine did enough damage that a new motor was going to be better money spent than fixing the phaser problem. I know that may not be the issue with yours but when I saw the year model it made me shiver a bit!! HA!!

Filter and oil change will NOT fix transmission problems. The transmission is a closed loop system. The only thing to plug up a filter is transmission parts (Seals and clutch packs). If the filter is plugged, you got bigger problems.
It may be as simple as a loose wire or broken solenoid? However based on your description of the problem, it could be a clutch pack that is toast and a rebuild is needed. Some power in reverse typically means everything is working, however there isn't enough force for the clutch pack to engage properly. Could be the fault of a solenoid, or worn out clutch pack. Not sure on that particular tranny, however most reverse clutch packs are the same as the 2/4 forward clutch pack on 4 speed transmissions. Reverse is engaged by a sun gear. If the 2/4 clutch pack is the problem you will have a hard shift from first to third, skipping second completely. Did you hear a load snap before it stopped working in reverse?
Did you say the tranny fluid has an odor? like a burnt smell? if so, she is toast. If not, a rebuild may not be needed, unless the sun gear is toast.

It went in this am they called Trans had metal parts in pan it's toast
I went with the factory rebuild be shop rebuild 3 year 100k warranty.
It's a small block, and seems to run good.
It's a work truck that doesn't haul much weight.
Heres hoping it works out
