Bad parenting has to do with anything their kids interfere with including fishing. Polite, courteous children are a joy to see catch fish on the other hand. I see far more of that than the other, but inevitably their parents are there to supervise, too. For the most part those parents and children also practice catch and release, or at least limited harvest with no complaint by the children. Perhaps that is a shoreline thing, not so obvious to boat fishermen.

This is an important issue. How do we encourage children to get out into the great outdoors without them getting into trouble or creating problems for those who did not chose to have them. The sportsman who takes his or her kids along and teaches them to participate responsibly is not the one for whom the rules have to be made and enforced. Those folks will follow the rules regardless and have my respect. There are just too many others around.

A lot of thought needs to go into this, way more than has been. One has to make and enforce the rules so that they do not unnecessarily hamper the really honest, keep the marginally honest honest and impede the dishonest. That is a whole lot harder than just putting it into one sentence. When it comes to children participating in a wider world there are millions of pitfalls to work around. Fishing isn't the only consideration in this.

That's about the way it is in Minnesota, too, as I understand it. That used to be only for residents, but now it also covers non-resident youths. The only real difference is that here we can party fish and help each other fill a total limit, which then must be distributed when the party breaks up so that no one person has more than an individual limit in possession. And here possession includes cleaned fish in the freezer.

I do not find it all that difficult to get youngsters who fish with me to release what they catch, not if one brings a camera along. I use such terms as recyling the resource, and protecting the breeding stock or put it back to grow up, or just let's not kill this one. The bigger problem tends to be when some other adult interferes. If everybody is on the same page, the kids understand, especially if they still have the bragging pictures to show momma or grandma or grandpa. The kids have a right to pride in their accomplishments, but that does not mean something has to be killed to make that happen.

I more or less do not approve of unlicensed youth keeping their own limits. That goes for unlimited children under family licenses, too. I also do not approve of very young fishermen who are not supervised by older relatives. I would place a minimum age for unsupervised fishing to about 8, definitely no younger.

Our resources up here are too fragile to allow that sort of unlimited harvest and fishing waters are simply too dangerous for the very young to be around by themselves. I see children dropped off by parents who then go about other business every once in a while. Other adults are then forced into watching out for them. To me that is irresponsible. If one has the kids one needs to take responsibility for them.
Bet you are a blast at parties.

    LOL yep!

Not much of a partyer, but then I am allergic enough to alcohol that I am not subject to alcoholism and so have avoided being stupidly drunk for a very long time. In fact I have to drink awful fast just to get loaded, I normally get miserably sick far quicker. Either way I do not enjoy the misery that results from either of those things. I had to learn that the hard way though. I suppose I am stupid often enough sober; so that is enough for me to handle anyway. I like a single quality beer or a good shot of quality Scotch or bourbon once in a while, but I have to stop there. For me there is very little enjoyment beyond that point. So I simply do not seem the point. That significantly reduces the number of parties that I am comfortable at and the number of those where I am really welcome. It cuts both ways.

Yeah, well he may be Minnesota's no1son, but here in MO, his attitude smells like no2 to me.
