What was printed on the tag? What kind of tag was it? Where was the tag located on the fish? Do you have a pic of the tag you could post?

There have been some studies in the past which have included tagged fish in the Kansas River. Two of the studies species that come to mind are flathead catfish and pallid sturgeon. Not to sound sarcastic, but was the tagged fish definitely a gar?

Another possibility is that an unauthorized person locally tagged a gar and turned it back in to the river...

I wouldn't waste a lot of time running around to multiple KDWPT offices with the tag. We should be able to get you squared away here.
If I remember correctly, the drum I caught was while fishing in Cedar Creek where it empties into the Kansas River in De Soto. Pretty sure it was a KSU tag.

    Birdgod,

Unfortunately after nearly four months since your original post I don't have any additional information for you on the tagged gar.

The tag was indeed a K-State tag. The KDWPT research office has been coordinating with the KSU Fish and Wildlife Cooperative Unit to track down the info on your tag. Several studies involving tagged fish in the Kansas River have been conducted by K-State students over the years. After searching several available tag databases they were unable to find your tag. It's possible that the info for your tag is still available, but not in a readily accessible computer database.

I will continue checking on your tag and I will post when/if I do have info to pass on.
