In the spring time I use to catch them on nightcrawlers in the Blue River at St. George, KS.

Try late April through early June at night. When I went to school in St. George we would camp on the river bank over night.
Last time I was back there the town had really cleaned everything up down there. They put in a boat launch, picnic tables and even a couple grills.
It was a nice little town to grow up in. Lots of good memories. Good luck to you.
Wishing you Blue Skies and Tight Lines
