Lake of the Ozark - Crappie Spawn Question
Do you have any reports on the 2016 crappie spawn at the Lake of the Ozarks? Here are some of my questions:
1. When information states that crappie spawn between 55 - 60 degrees, is this surface temp of where the crappie live (10 feet down)?
2. Do crappie spawn on pea gravel mainly?
3. Do crappie cycle with the full moon triggered around the expanding hours of sunlight or is the water temp the main spawn driver?
4. What is your intell regarding Lake of the Ozark crappie spawn?
5. What other tips do you recommend?

I got in touch with the Lake's biologist. See his responses below.
1. When information states that crappie spawn between 55 - 60 degrees, is thissurface temp of where the crappie live (10 feet down)?
Thisgenerally refers to surface temp which is not much different than the temp at10 feet.
2. Do crappie spawn on pea gravel mainly?
Theydo seem to favor pea gravel, but will spawn on a variety of hardsubstrates.
3. Do crappie cycle with the full moon triggered around the expanding hours ofsunlight or is the water temp the main spawn driver?
Photoperiodand water temp are the main drivers.
4. What is your intell regarding Lake of the Ozark crappie spawn?
Wewill likely not know the strength of the 2016 yearclass until the fall of 2017when they become vulnerable to trapnets. Occasionally we will observe anincrease in the YOY catch in are fall TN, but that is not the norm.
5. What other tips do you recommend?
Crappie are shallow and arespawning right now. The next couple of weeks should be the peak.
