Thread: Burnt cane

Same thing on the lakes along the Mississippi River. Since Asian Carp invasion, the crappie fishing has gone to nothing on these lakes!

I heard about Burnt Cane about the time I joined C.C. I drove by while headed west for a short visit. A guy drove up and we talked. It was getting in bad shape then. I never could get anyone to fish with me there at the time.

Yeah, we use to fish it a lot close to 20 yrs ago, then on time we went you could launch off the levee, that’s how high it was, the ditch on the far end flooded over into it, we guessed that’s when the carp got in, down hill from then on for us, last time their, 3 of of those nasty things jumped in the boat, tore stuff up, crapped all over the carpet, haven’t been back since, that was probably 10-12 yrs ago, we sure loved it while it lasted tho, often think about it but it’s to far from Jonesboro just to do a turn around

The winter when the water got up to the second level on the levee and water was everywhere was the ending of some fine fishing. Crappie left, carp arrived. Still want to try it but fear all is lost.

I haven’t checked in here in a while. Afraid there is trouble for Burnt Cane. The dam on the low end washed out earlier this year. Us locals have always called the lake “9-mile”, but since the water drop, it’s only about maybe 2-mile. Can’t get past the first sandbar. A friend was able to launch there recently to bass fish, but it’s getting iffy at the launch.

Looking at google earth there are a few more lakes nearby. Burnt cane and Cow Bayou along hwy 79 are the only 2 I see ramps.

I used to catch limits of good fish in an Arkansas River oxbow. It is hard to catch any now. We see big Asian Carp (Bigheads and Silvers) on livescope .
