I run 12 lb on my open face bass reels and 6 lb on my ultra lite crappie casting reels. Hope that helps.
After my dad passed away I held onto his fishing poles, he has bait caster reels, my question is what's the best kind of test line to re line the rods with as the line on them are brittle and break easily. The rods are light but not ultra, I don't know if that is very helpful as I never paid attention to the gear part of fishing Daddy always took care of that, I just fished.
Fishing is meditation

Monica .... it would depend on what you intend to use the reels to fish for .... Bass, Crappie, Catfish, whatever. Also, what technique you would mostly use them for .... various trolling methods, casting, tightline (fishing straight down over side of boat), etc. It might also be a good idea to check on the rods & see what the max pound test line they are rated for, if you intend to use them as combos again after putting on new line.

Baitcaters don't cast light stuff well . I run 14 lb Stren for Catfishing on my old Bass Tackle. That is a little heavy for crappie fishing and like I was saying light baits or weights don't cast well with bait casters . Have you ever casted a bait caster ? If not find someone to help you on your first try .
