    Default Wade fishing

Well, the White River has finally got out of the oxbow I fish regularly. With the wind being up the next couple of days I was thinking about doing some wading. What are ya'lls thoughts on the subject? Never waded for crappie, but I'm going to give it a shot today. Maybe the snakes won't be to agressive. If so The .45 w/ rat shot will keep them back.Good luck to everybody this weekend.

go for it aint nothing as much fun as trying to keep a big un from going between your legs. Fish that is, snakes have plenty of room until I return to earth from Mars.

Dennis, I fish Newman Lake around Georgetown. It is on the lease I'm in. I'm really gettin spoiled fishin behind that locked gate.Have not fished it yet this year, water has been too high and I suspect the fish were up in the woods? But should really be good the rest of the year. Had fresh water running through it the last few months, and hopefully brought in some new fish. It had been a couple of years since the river had been in it, and it had gooten extremely low. I'll give a report later in the weekend.

I hear ya Tunica, can't stand a snake. Had a cottonmouth chase me out of some buckbrush last summer and I was in my boat. Couldn't get the TM speed changed fast enough. But I culled him as soon as I got a little space between us.

I have waded Big Hurricane back in the early 90's and caught some nice fish. I went there last year fishing out of my boat but didn't try to wade. Probably a good thing I would have gotten hung up with all the yo-yoes hanging on every buck brush limb.

The yo-yo's do get thick on the refuge. Where I'm fishing is just across the Red River from Hurricane. I have caught quite a few fish out of Honey Lake and Mallard pond on the refuge. Fishing should be good over there this year as the river has been up in them all winter.Good fresh water!!

Move very slowly and strategically. Scoot your boots along the bottom and "feel" for anything that may throw you in the water. You do not want to go for a swim in March. Other than that, go light on the gear and don't forget a stringer.

With the cold front moving through late yesterday, the fish may not be as shallow as they were earlier in the week. This weekend may not be optimal conditions for wade fishing. If the water level has been falling, that is a big sign that fish won't be shallow. Like you said, rising water will send them up into the shallow newly flooded vegetation, and from my limited experience has been the best time for wading.

One article that I read by Keith Sutton stated that the peak time for wade fishing in Arkansas was when the number of daylight hours reached 13 hours per day. We are still not quite there, but it should be good sometime in the first part of April.

You may be cuttin' it a little early to get out there and wade, but what the heck, go give it a try. Good luck with 'em, Kin.

I like the news from the refuge up there. I haven't been in a few years. I used to wear out some bream on hurricane. I went fishing up there one time when it was flooded. I got lost and finally found a fishermen and asked him how I got to where I was. The funny thing is he knew and directed me out of the woods.
Try getting lost in the woods in a boat. It is an experience.
