I have tried braid, I liked it, but I bass fish a lot and I am used to setting the hook really hard, when I put braid on my crappie rods, I broke a couple of tip sections because of the natural instinct to try and rip their lips off like I was setting the hook on a 6 pound bass. It did cut down on the number of jigs I lost each trip. I crappie fish in the fall and winter and I am fresh off of fishing all spring and summer for bass so it takes a few trips to break the habit of setting the hook real hard.

Guru .... if your Crappie rods/reels are separate from your Bass fishing ones, then continue to set the hook the same way ... BUT, loosen the drag on your Crappie outfits just to the point where it will slip just before the rod loads up at max bend. You'll still put enough force in the hookset to stick the fish, but you won't rip the hook thru their lips or break rod tips.

Great advice right there. I also greatly lighten the drag when using braid on crappie. For me the extra sensitivity of braid is so much better. Keep a piece of an old wooden handle or something with you to wrap the line around and pull if you get hung up. If not it will slice you like a hot knife through butter.

Yep ... I know from experience about that !! And I also recommend having a pair of Fiskar Child Size Scissors handy, too. They cut braid clean & blunt across the tag end, which makes it much easier to poke that tag end thru the small line eyes of a jig. Many other cutting tools slice or crush their way thru the braid, which can leave strands of the fibers sticking out from the tag end ... and threading them thru a small opening is as cumbersome & frustrating as trying to thread a small needle with yarn.

Amen!! My wife stocks up yearly on these scissors when back to school starts up. They are awesome... best braid cutting scissors I have ever seen. I feel like I am sneaking them from her... but she knows!!
