Thanks to Wayne, who did a great job of collecting crappie data for us, I was able to get our first look at the crappie population on Greers Ferry. Wayne followed the protocol that I gave him to a T and was able to collect us 60 crappie that ranged from 9.5" to 15.75". Although we were not able to run the normal analysis on the data due to it being collected with rod and reel and not having all of Wayne's catch data, I was able to calculate mean length at age. This tells us on average how big a fish is at a certain age. Also I was able to calculate relative weight (Wr), a condition index. Growth in terms of length is not bad on Greers. It isn't in the same league as one of the central Arkansas lakes, such as Conway, but it is characterized as having good growth (greater than 10" after 2.5 years old. The Wr of white and black crappie was 80 and 84. The goal is to be close to 100. So these Wrs are not bad. Over all the crappie Wrs were better than the walleye Wr (68) and the hybrid Wr (75). Largemouth Wr was 87 and White Bass Wr was 85.
