    Default Best 9.9 hp outboard

I'm thinking about biting the bullet and replacing my old Evinrude 9.9 outboard. What is the best small hp outboard being made today--Tohatsu/Nissan/Mercury, 'Zuke, or Honda? Are there any others??

Tohatsu makes the Nissan and pretty sure the Merc. From what I have seen and talked to guys about the Tohatsu for the money is probably your best deal. Yamaha, Suzuki, and Honda are great motors but to me in that size range not worth the extra money.

Tohatsu or Suzuki. The Suzuki is battery less fuel injected.

Call me for a quote on either.

I can't say for sure on the new ones. But if you ever find a good 90s model Tohatsu or Nissan just buy it to have. Even the eighties models are good. Power to weight to simplicity came together pretty good on those models.Rumor was these motors actually turned about 15 hp. I have owned several 9.9's and I'd say that the estimate is pretty close. One of my most prized possessions. I'll sic the dog on anybody gets to looking sticky fingered around that thing.I know the four strokes are the future, and I know they are quiet and sip gas.But I'm from the muscle car era and I still like me some basic low tech horsepower.

I bought a new Honda 9.9 and used it for several years. The power head ran great but I couldn't keep a lower unit in the thing. The least little bump would break something, usually the horizontal shaft After replacing the lower unit for the fourth time I went & got me an old johnson, which has never failed me since.

The OMC johnnyrude 9.9/15 has to tbe the most iconic portable outboard in history. They made it at least until 1996. Thats what i would go with.

I have a 1987 Evinrude 9.9 and it's a dandy of a motor, always starts, very dependable. I thought about getting the 15hp carb. for it but never have yet.

I have one that was made after Bombardier purchased OMC I think it is like a 2002 maybe. It's a good motor too.Just not as fast as the Tohatsu, but a lot of guys did hop up the old Johnsons and they were little powerhouses. I bought an old 70's model one time that was hopped but turned out to have too much wrong in the lower end to salvage it.
