You should've been here yesterday!!!!
Hey guys wanted to share this trophy i shot Fri morning.. From what i have gathered from the internet and from everyone elses first glance opinion i have come to the conclusion that this is a Black Duck/Mallard Hybrid.. I have never seen one and neither have any of the other old timers down at the river..

it looks like it mite be moloted late
Thats what we thought at first too.. Then we did some research online bc it just didn't look right.. We killed some immature drakes that morning and it was bigger than them, and plus it matches the images on the internet of the hybrid's..

You can see the black duck crown on its head and then the chocolate back feathers and black duck weird green wing feathers.. The belly also had dark fethers on it (darker than a unmolted mallard's)..

This one is not a real good example of this, but the red legs of a mallard drake are the final stage in breeding plumage. So if you kill one that you are unsure whether it is a hybrid or just not completely plumed, the legs will tell you. This one is definately a hybrid though, bc the burgundy patch would be speckled with hen-like feathers if it was 100% mallard. I would say he is mixed with either a black duck or a gadwall. Hard to say but I would lean more toward a black duck. Nice bird though, the AGFC biologists are usually more than happy to look at questionable breeds if you want a professional opinion
Thats a cool bird whatever you want to call it. :high five I've never seen anything like it. You thinking about mounting it?

hey mooney it has to b a hybird i have a black mallard on my wall it has to b a hybird
Yes sir!!! I kinda want to get it looked at and make sure that is what it is before i spend the money to have it done. but everything i can find on the internet points to Mallard/Blackduck hybrid. They say that it isn't that rare, although i think they are down here..
