There's a few things. One is conditioning. The longer the summer goes, the easier it is to stay with it. Also, energy drinks can help. Some guys take naps on their boats or on the doc and head back out. Just don't stay pout any longer than you think you can handle. Always be safe. Especially for the drive home. The fish will be there again tomorrow night but you might not if you push too hard. Where your vest too.

Where is your bait presentation/placement in regards to where the light is placed? I saw an in-fisherman episode and Al was saying to keep the bait at the edge of where the light diminishes. What do you guys do? I've tried night fishing several times and never have much luck. How deep do you fish as a percentage of the total water column depth? I try to keep the bait slightly lower than the majority of minnows thinking that maybe when the crappies feed up into the minnows, they'll see mine first... but not too deep that the crappies are over-top of my presentation...

My wife & I have done quite a bit of night fishing this summer. We have caught fish on some nights and nothing some nights. We try to keep our bait just on the edge of the dark/light and usually about 1/2 way down of whatever depth were fishing. Have had Crappie a foot under water swim through right by the light. We use Reel Lites we have a 612 & a 712, great lights for night fishing. You can see them at Fishing Light, L.E.D.s lights, space age technology lights

    Chumming for crappie at night

“If you chum crappie they will come"

Feeding the fish with food for the benefit of catching them. The saying “Cast breads upon the waters” The idea is to get the game fish to thinking there is free food, fooling them into thinking there is no hooks around. This concept works for the fishermen getting the fish to come to them, instead of searching the lake for them. Ration don’t overfeed.

    Some preferred chumming items
Save your fish scales and freeze them into ice cubes (recommend do this in extra refrigerator). When you go fishing throw out couple cubes every so often. As the cubes melt the scales will reflect the your night night, and attract bait and game fish.

Egg shells frozen into cubes or just tossed on the waters will do the same, use a roller pin and crush them up super fine.

Minnows get 3-4 dozen and crush or grind them into a paste or very small titbits, use a pan to catch all the drippings.
Left over fish guts using the same procedure.

Canned oiled sardines using the above techniques.

Canned: cat food, dog food, canned corn, breakfast cereals, etc: the ideas are unlimited!

    How to present the above:
A coffee can, nylon stocking, mesh bag, anything that has small holes so there is a steady stream of scent and drippings of blood and guts flowing into the waters. Take a weight to lower the above to varied depths until you start to catch fish.

    Jarring for crappie:
This is a trick clear back to when glass was invented. Glass jar with bunch of holes in the lid. Add water and 6-12 minnows. Tie the neck with a strong cord and lower it to the depth you wish to fish. The commotion of the minnows trying to escaping and the noise of them bumping the inside of the jar, plus their scent escaping thru the vented lid is hard for crappie to resist.

    Wicked combo:
Use the jarring method above with gold fish, can you image the gold fish scales flashing off your fishing light?

All the ideas of been proven by fishermen long long ago.

Check your local laws to ensure that it is legal in your state.

A lot of good info but one thing I noticed while bank fishing at night with minnows is the scent and sound of them in the bucket can and will attract snakes which is not a good thing in cottonmouth country and will scare the heck out of you anywhere else.

Time? Get to your planned spot an time to tie up before dark.
Full Moon? Seem to catch bigger fish around it. Approaching weather fronts seem to crank up the action too.
    Bank vs Boat? Boat
Live bait? I snag what the light provides with a couple of treble hook and a 3/4 oz. sinker.
    Aritiical bait? Nope
Black Lights? Sometimes but I've found that the light from my fishing light puts off plenty
    Cap Lights? Definately
Types of fish? Crappie, White bass, Smallmouth, Walleyes, Hybrids, Rockfish, Catfish
Depths? A foot or so above the thermocline.
    Docks? Nope
    Ice fishing? No Ice here
    Bass? yep
    Crappie? yep
    Walleyes? yep
    Stripers? yep
Other equipment Old fishing rod in a rod holder to get the light out away from the boat
    Etc:

    A few other tips

    1) Use appropiate lbs. test line you never know what you'll catch.
    2) We have a lot of weekend pleasure boaters, so i like to hang some glow sticks in visble places around the boat.

    3) Carry an extra set of clothes...two if you've got your wife with ya. She'll be thankful when find out you brought them even though she told you not too...

    4) Be patient I've had bait take up to an hour or more to start really swarming.

    5) Carry plenty of drinks and something to eat.

    6) This method of fishing is a great time to carry a kid. Take advantage of it. You'll have as much fun watching them.

    7) Carry something for the ladies to use the restroom.

    8) Bring plent of rope you may have to make your own tie points and tow somebody in after an all nighter.

Hey Bob, I live in North Central arkansas. What time of the year do I need to start fishing at night? What indicator do you use, such as water temp, night time temp. etc.
Many of my lakes have too many ski boats during the day so I thought night would be better. thanks Tony

Qbeam Starfire II- Over 500 boated in the last 3 outings. I have fished green lights and LED lights and just keep coming back to the Starfire IIs...there is no comparison. I have nothing against the reel lights, and for the right price, would give them a shot since they seem to be so popular, but the others I have fished with just dont get the job done. Fish creek channel edges, drop offs, along the drop offs of points. Dont just drop the light and go, LOOK AT THE BOTTOM. You dont have to be on fish, but being where fish like to be helps.
