So, how do we get a load of iron wood ? BTW, while the majority of the construction materials used in the ships of Nelson`s "wooden walls of England" were indeed oak, the lion`s share of the framing and keel of HMS VICTORY and her sister 100 gun `ship of the line` classes were in fact Brazilian IRON WOOD bought from their Portuguese allies and crafted with extreme difficulty by the ship yards of the Royal Navy. When these canvas powered `battleships` were eventually stricken and sold for scrap their framing was VERY desired for use in new construction as apparently it is rather water resistant...

Underwater, many trees (or their stumps anyway) last extremely long periods of time. Cedar stumps have been found on the Ohio and New York shores of Lake Erie carbon dating back 7,000 to 9,000+ yrs old. Many were seen by both sonar and early underwater cameras on Caribu Shoals in Lake Huron shortly after the wreck of the famous ore carrier the SS EDMOND FITZGERALD in 1977; she likely momentarily grounded on an unmarked pinnicle rock there. There were stumps littered on the lower edges of the rock outcroppings. The area had been submerged at least that long geologically...

We have ironwood here in oklahoma. We have the hop hornbeam kind. Cuts about the same as Osage orange with a chainsaw when it's green. Haven't even tried to cut it when dry.

In my area it grows about as big as a dogwood, 25' high or so. I have used it for cover, it has branches like a persimmon. Just the right amount of branches for bigger fish 10+" or bigger. It is not protected just a normal tree for my area, if you know what your looking for.
