I just got back from fishing and got shut out. We had rain last night and it was a "blue bird" clear today. I knew I shouldn't have went, but sometimes fishing takes over. Haha.

Good to hear back from you Jeremy, I hope you find some good days to fish this weekend. As far as the cost of the bobber/jig & postage goes, I only spend a few bucks sending it to you so why don't you donate something to this web site. Surley someone here can tell you how to donate to crappie.com. I am sure they can use a few bucks.

anchorpuller - I have been doing pretty good at this one spot I fish. I have been keeping everything over ten inches. Been catching alot of 9 7/8" ers.

Tim - I will send yours tomorrow in the mail, you should get it in the next few days.

    Thanks!

I've tried to make a few of these. I still can't get the weight right. I usually use just 1/32 oz. jig. Do I need to cut off the excess weight? I like the theory for the light bites but what if a crappie swims up with it? Like when your using a regular set up bobber and it lays flat on the water? How do you know if a fish has it if the bobber is already laying flat?

    JZ,

You should move to a 1/64 jig head, and if you have to, cut off the lead until the bobber lays flat.

This setup will only work in certain situations, when I think the fish are swimming up with it what I do is slowly reel the bobber back in. If the fish grabs it while it is being reeled in the bobber will stand up. Keep it moving!

    Thanks for your question.

I regulary fish a bush pile (BP) that is in 12' of water. The tops of the BP is 5' below the surface, so most of the time the crappies are comming up out of the BP to attack the jig. I always start with the jig 2-3' below the bobber and move deeper if I don't catch fish.

After casting it out, I will give it about 10 seconds to let the jig fall all the way down before I move it. Popping the bobber with a small jerk of the rod will make the jig dart up and down, do that about every 5-10 seconds. If nothing happens just slowly reel the bobber in a few feet and do it again. Remember the spot you catch your 1st crappie in and keep going back until it produces no more fish.

Another method to use is just to cast it out, wait until you think the jig is all the way down, then start reeling in the bobber. When the jig hits something it will raise the bobber up. Sometimes this is a crappie that is just holding the jig in it's mouth and sometimes it is a just a underwater snag. I just pop the bobber with a swift snap of the rod to see what it is. Be careful not to get "trigger happy" and lose your bobber on a snag. Haha.

In the spring and fall you can rip them in shallow water with this set up. If you are a bank fisherman, like me, you can cover alot of water using the slow retrieve method. When you find the fish you can hammer that area. Summer fishing you will need to find brush piles under water and fish above them. Overcast days are the best.

    Thanks!

I went to a pond one time and was looking for crappies and found catfish. They would make the bobber stand up just like a crappie. I caught and released 17 catfish that adveraged 5 pounds that day. I was back reeling and running up and down the bank all afternoon. It was great.

Any time I take a kid fishing I always give them spinning tackle and this rig. It is easy to cast and they scream when the boober stands up. All kinds of fish will hit a small jig, I have a pond that is full of small bass and they will attack that sucker.

    Cool

Thanks, I'll give it a try with a 1/64 oz. That should work for sure. I'm also going to bust the extra weight off a 1/32 and see. I would love to hammer em using this. I do fish from shore almost exclusively, but am getting the boat ready to try out some marinas. I know one is deep right off Lake Erie and has brush piles in it. Crappie should be there year round. I'm going to give it a try when I go there.

Fishing from shore this spring shallow, the fish I was catching where just hammering everything I threw out there. Toss out a minnow a foot under a bobber and sometime the bobber never stopped on the surface, it would go straight under and bam. So I didn't think it mattered what I used.

Thanks for the tip and I'll let u know how it works. This sure is some thread u started.
