listen with your eyes---its the only way to beleive what you hear...
I use them moestly for sunfish and I use a cricket hook. I Hook them through the collar and back through the body. That seems to hold them on the hook better.
whizkid i agree that is the way i do it.I caught a bunch of crappie in selma ,alabama about 15 years ago with crickets havnt done it since though burditt
Same way I do it.The only bad thing about crickets is bait robbers will clean ya out!!Originally Posted by whizkids

bad thing about crickets is the bait thieves. id rather use red worms or wigglers. they usually get the hook in their mouth when they try to steal the bait and hes caught. crickets got too many handles a brim can grab hold of and not get the hook in his mouth. and the bait is gone.......Originally Posted by DENNIS BOWERS

Anyone use the Berkley type Gulp or Power baits or Yum etc. for brim. I went up to my brother-in-laws small pond this morning and caught 28 small one(threw a whole lot back) on cut up hotdogs. Didn't have but 3 nice ones but it has been so long that we wanted some fresh fish to eat that I keep some that I would normally throw back. Plan on stinking the grease tomorrow. My brother-in-law said he and his ex. keep 50 last week on something he picked up at Walmart called a minnow, may be a Ranosky(sp). is going to leave me one the next time he comes by my house.

Steve, I hear you on stinkin' the grease :D I haven't tried any of the
Gulp stuff, but it sure would beat crickets in one way - the kids spend
more time playing with crickets than fishing. Guess that is not all bad, though.
Want some entertainment, take what crickets you have left, and empty out
in middle of a coop with 6 chickens in it :p They say chickens are a laugh-
riot with a plastic worm too, but I'm afraid they'd get choked on it, and
my wife'd kill me. When I used to brim fish, I loved to find one of those
gravel beds put out by the park service folks, and fish crickets kind of
Carolina-rig style, just a split shot a foot or so ahead of a #8 regular length aberdeen hook, heck to get out of them if you are not quick on the strike, but solves a lot of the bait stealing. I don't know what they were, fly hooks
I suspect, but I bought a pack of #12 "Kahle" style hooks with crickets in
mind, and haven't tried them yet - but a #8 Tru-turn works pretty good.
If one didn't hit it by the time it hit bottom, I'd draaag it forward real slow,
then wait a few seconds and drag again. Used to catch some monsters on
giant meal worms too, but they got hard to find around here, this was before
you could order them easily. Wife still says I can't keep 'em in the fridge tho!

You ever notice no matter how you hook the cricket the bream always get the yummy part. and all you have left is the head and two legs.
