...go to fishing spots.....3-part attractor series.....
I came across some plastic drums 30 gal. Can anybody give me some insight on how to use them for crappie condos? We have placed stakes and so on but was wondering how to use these.

Spawning barrels placed in 2-4 feet depths offer the advantage of both cover and spawning habitat. Doug Henley with the Kentucky Dept. of Fish and Wildlife came up with these for placement in the Ohio River where siltation of the creeks limits the spawning.
Plastic barrels are cut parallel to the ends to make two open top halfs. Openings are cut in the sides then a 2 inch layer of concrete is placed in the bottom. While the concrete is still wet, pea stone is sprinkled on and tamped lightly.
Before placement a piece of wood (usually drift wood found at the ramp) is wired to the top to give a bit of overhead shade.
Crappie, blue gill and bass seek out hard bottom surfaces to spawn. These are certainly a way to get there.
