I have had to throw little ones back after they swallowed the hook.
I know they wont live but I rather give them to turtles and birds,
than get caught with one. 10"s+ or release Gary

It could be a variety of causes. Did you see any other dead species other than crappie? ie shad, bass, etc... I suspect it might be due to a algal bloom. Harmful algal blooms have occurred on Wylie before, and this is the right time of year when we see more algal activity. NCDENR has a specialist who is researching this issue. If you would like to know more, you can type in NC HAB or harmful algal bloom on google. The toxins given off by some cyanobacteria (blue-green) algae are some of the most toxic compounds known. Can you share which specific coves/areas had the problem? Our researcher might be interested in testing the water for toxins such as microcystin. Is the bloom on the NC side? If so, I have the sample kits in my office to send sample results into our HAB program. As long as it is in NC. Feel free to call me at 704-578-0873. Mark NCDENR
