What format did you end up converting with ? I tried putting KYHDRO maps on my Garmin 72 and never could get them converted . Any clues ?
Been fooling around with maps a long time. I always wanted to put my own map on my gps.
Needless to say, I have a greater understanding about the mapping process and an appreciation for Navionics and the other map makers.:o I know now why there is not too much details in the details.
This pic shows my Garmin GPS276C with KY Hydrographx raster maps of the Big Sandy River, Tn. Not too hard to do once you understand the procedures. The only thing is, there are no procedures. It is a self learning process.

Someone posted this on a thread about 4 months back or so. I saved the link because it looks like something that I would like to try. This way, I could map the actual areas I fish vs having a bunch of maps of lakes I'll never fish.

Yep. I looked at it. You gotta use your pc to use the maps. Daylight viewable monitors/displays are very expensive.
I can can create my own maps now and load them on my garmin. The state/county/town here are building a 1000 acre lake about 2 miles from our home in Huntingdon. I plan to map it in my Jon boat. too small a lake for the big doers....Gives me something to do. I can only catch so many fish....legally.

I am not familiar with the GPS 72. Is it a map capable unit?
You have to have a map capable unit with memory card.
To make these maps work, you vectorize the raster images then save as Garmin img files. You can upload a Garmin Img file onto the Garmin memory card. The process is not hard, it is the terminology that is confusing.

What about a map capable unit that does not have a card slot? Can those color maps be used on a greyscale unit?
The methods for doing this has been around for quite a long time. You gotta be computer savvy, and definitely not for a beginner. Canepole might have devised a different method on his own that is easier. Ready to do a How-To on this Canepole?
A complete tutorial on how to create any kind of map and upload to Garmin units can be found here:

Yep. I have used it. Complicated.
Mapwel is what you may want to try. Much simpler.
This is the program I am currently using.
