I prefer using a float and fly rod from BnM. Specially made for such a technique. They have weight at the but of the rod allows for further casting. Give them a try im sure you will be impressed.
I have an 81/2 ft Ugly Stik Crappie Rod(crappie action4-8lb line.My question is what is this rod best used for? I have used it for casting jig and bobber rigs while wading.Most of our fishing is done from shore or wading.Thanks for your help.

Those rods should be great for that. I would use them for longlining out the back of the boat also.
