Have you checked your emergency kill switch to see if it has been accidently activated?
Went to the lake and the motor would not start. It turns over fine and is getting gas but its like its not fireing. What could it be? It is a 1990 60 hp Mercury. Thanks

you sure you gitting enough gass to theplugs . some time the chock doesen`t close all the way . pull them and see if they are wet .check the plug wires it there is no spark . the kill switch would be the f irst thing to check . then the safety nutral switch .

retired and now i will always fish
You may also want to check your spark plug wires. Sometimes they burn and break off the tips that holds onto your plugs. Good luck.
I got me one of those little spark testers that go inline to the spark plug and when turning over the motor the light flashes verifying that there's spark to the plug, etc.
However, in your case, sure sounds like no spark for sure. Wish I could offer more but, that's it.......

Does your motor have coil packs? Check those, and then the stator. The stator went out in mine and it gets no spark at all.
Mine quit firing and it was the stator (expensive!!!). About a month later the power pack went out (a little less expensive, but close!!!). Here's hoping your problem is simplier than mine was.

Check the kill switch FIRST! :D
I agree..check kill switch first. If it is not activated, remove the cowl and look for the black with yellow stripe wire coming from wiring harness. there should be a plug. unplug this and see what happens. Still no results could be stator, trigger or switchbox. you will need a DVA tester to perform the checks I just took mine to the shop and paid them to test it then replaced my own stator and trigger. If you have never had a stator put on it I would suspect stator...Those earlier black stator are famous for burning out. Just my 2 cents
